Privacy Policy

Who this policy covers

yTranslate is operated by Aleksei Jusev, based in Ireland, who is the data controller for the purposes of GDPR. There is no separate registered company at this time. You can reach us directly at support@ytranslate.app for anything in this policy, including exercising any of the rights described below.

Information we collect

We collect account information you provide (such as a display name); room activity (room creation, join events, and language selections); the settings of rooms you create (room name, PIN — stored encrypted — and allowed languages); credit and subscription balances and the usage metering needed to operate billing (how long you spoke, how many characters were translated and into how many languages — metering records contain no message text); and audio captured by the app while a session you started is active. That audio is your own voice when you speak to a room, and may include other people’s voices when you use Conversational Mode or when you use the app to understand someone speaking near you. It is processed to generate a transcript and translation and is not retained.

Listeners who join a room with a code do not need an account. From a listener’s device we receive the join event, the chosen language, and an app-integrity check — never a name and never audio.

If you choose to link your account using Sign in with Apple or Google, we store the unique account identifier that provider gives us for this purpose — it lets you keep the same subscription and credits if you reinstall the app or switch devices. We never receive your Apple or Google password or other account details.

We access the microphone only while a session you started is active. The app never records in the background. If what is captured includes sensitive information — for example, health details discussed at a medical appointment — you are directing us to process it for the sole purpose of producing the transcript and translation you asked for.

How we use your data

  • To provide real-time speech recognition and translation while a session is active.
  • To operate credit balances, subscriptions, and billing.
  • To maintain and improve service reliability.
  • To let you keep the same subscription and credit balance across reinstalls or a new device, if you choose to link your account with Apple or Google.
  • To verify requests come from a genuine, unmodified copy of the app on a real device, and to prevent fraud and abuse (Apple’s App Attest on iOS; Google’s Play Integrity on Android).
  • Audio and transcripts handled by our own speech and translation providers are never used to train models and are not retained beyond the session. Where your device’s built-in speech recognition is used (see below), Apple’s or Google’s own retention and training terms apply to that step; we do not receive or keep that audio.

Third-party processors

Depending on the language you speak, audio is handled in one of two ways. Where our own speech-recognition provider supports the language, audio is sent to that provider to generate text. For other languages, the app uses your device’s built-in speech recognition, which sends audio to Apple (on iPhone) or Google (on Android) for processing under their own privacy terms. The app tells you which applies before the microphone opens. In every case the resulting text is sent to our translation provider to produce listener-language output.

Payment is processed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play), depending on where you subscribe. If you sign in, Apple or Google acts as your identity provider for account linking. Apple’s App Attest (iOS) and Google’s Play Integrity (Android) verify that your device is running a genuine copy of the app. We do not sell personal data to third parties. We may update which providers we use over time — this policy will always describe the categories of processing involved, whether or not it names a specific vendor.

Data retention

Room transcripts are not retained on our servers beyond the active session. Our speech-recognition provider is configured for zero retention of audio and transcripts. Our translation provider does not store the text it translates.

Your device does keep a local copy of your most recent room’s last 100 messages, so they’re still there if you reopen the app shortly after — this local copy is automatically dropped from view after 2 hours and is overwritten the next time you’re in an active room.

Room settings are kept for 90 days after the room was last used, so you can resume a recent room, then deleted. Rooms that are still in use are never deleted. Account and billing records are retained as required for legal and accounting purposes. Residual copies of deleted data may remain in routine database backups for a limited time before being purged.

Saved notes. If you turn on Save notes (off by default), the app keeps a written record of each session — including what other participants said, as translated for you — as a file on your device only. There is no size limit, and a note is kept until you delete it or remove the app. Notes are never sent to us and we cannot see, recover or delete them for you. You manage them under Settings → Notes.

Exporting. A note can be exported as a PDF and handed to your device’s share sheet. Anything you share that way leaves your device by your own action, and we have no control over where it goes afterwards.

Other people’s words

When you use the app to understand someone speaking near you, or in Conversational Mode, their speech is captured on your device and processed the same way as your own. You are responsible for using the app lawfully where you are, including any requirement to tell people their words are being transcribed. Saved notes may contain other people’s words; those notes are under your control, and you are responsible for how you store and share them. See “Other people’s speech” in our Terms & Conditions.

Security

Data in transit is encrypted. Room PINs are encrypted at rest with a key held outside the database, and only the room owner can view a PIN. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; if we learn of a security incident affecting your personal data we will notify you as required by law.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account from within the app under Settings → Account. Your account stops working immediately and any rooms you own, with their names and PINs, are removed at once. If you sign in again within 30 days, your account and credits are restored intact, and so is your subscription unless you cancelled it through your App Store or Google Play settings in the meantime. After 30 days the deletion becomes permanent: we erase the identifiers that link the account to you, and where you signed in with Apple we revoke the sign-in token with Apple. Billing records are kept in a form no longer linked to your identity, as the law requires. Deleting your account does not cancel a store subscription — that must be done in your App Store or Google Play settings — and it does not touch saved notes, which live only on your device. A few technical identifiers — a random identifier the app generates on first launch, not derived from your device’s hardware, and an app-integrity key — are stored in the device’s secure keychain, may survive reinstalling the app, and are not linked to your account on our servers.

Cookies and analytics on this website

This marketing website (not the app itself) uses Google Analytics, but only after you accept it via the cookie banner. See our Cookie Policy for full details on what's used and how to change your choice.

Children’s privacy

yTranslate is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. You must be 16 or older to create an account or make a purchase. Listening in a room does not require an account. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we’ll remove it.

Your rights under GDPR and similar laws

If you are located in the EU/EEA, UK, or a jurisdiction with similar protections, you have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. Contact us using the details below to exercise these rights, or use the in-app account deletion described above.

Legal basis. We process data to provide the service you’ve asked for (contract), to prevent fraud and verify genuine app installs (legitimate interest), and, for website analytics only, with your consent.

International transfers. Our speech-recognition and translation providers, and our servers, process your data in the EEA. Both providers are headquartered outside the EEA; any access from outside the EEA is covered by EU-approved transfer safeguards (Standard Contractual Clauses) in their data-processing terms. Where your device’s built-in speech recognition is used, Apple or Google process that audio in locations they control.

You have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. For Ireland this is the Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie); for the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above.
